Sealane Marketing believes that understanding the roots of the industry that we serve has been and continues to be critical to our success. So, every Wednesday, we plan on sharing what we call a "Way Back Wednesday" in which we give a glimpse of our industry's history.

Kroger began in 1883 when Barney Kroger invested his life savings of $372 to open a single grocery store at 66 Pearl Street in downtown Cincinnati. He had a simple motto: “Be particular. Never sell anything you would not want yourself.”

Nearly 140 years later, the Kroger Company is still particular about how we serve customers and community, how we innovate and who we hire. As the nation’s largest grocer with nearly 2,800 stores in 35 states operating under 28 different names, we meet our customers’ changing needs by making fresh food accessible to all. Our current practices are rooted in Barney Kroger’s early efforts to serve customers through food freshness, low prices and innovation—fundamentals that remain at the heart of our Kroger mission today. This is the story of all the people in our history who helped change the way we shop. People who continue to make a difference in the lives of our customers every day.

Sealane Marketing believes that understanding the roots of the industry that we serve has been and continues to be critical to our success. So every Thursday, we plan on sharing what we call an "Industry Throwback" in which we give a glimpse of our industry's history.

"In 1930, Emanuel Stolaroff established a small company in Los Angeles specializing in cosmetic products and personal hygiene products, by the name of Natone.
In 1954, when he was travelling to Europe on business, he heard about an amazing soap: soft, transparent amber, quick and easy to rinse out, without leaving any residue. In a word, it is the ideal soap because it does not irritate the skin. It was then given the name of NEUTROGENA®, due to its neutral pH, almost identical to that of water.
Convinced that there was a market for soap of such quality, Emanuel Stolaroff established an innovative commercial strategy for his time. Deciding to differentiate from his competitors, he focused on the transparent amber soap and extended its area of distribution to large stores and pharmacies. It was a success. The soap sold so well that in 1962, NEUTROGENA® became the group brand."

"“THE BEEF PEOPLE” — Winn-Dixie has been associated with Jacksonville for so long that it’s hard to believe that it didn’t originate here. Company founder William Milton (W. M.) Davis hailed from Texas. In 1913, he bought a Burley, Idaho, general store and renamed it “Davis Mercantile.” Taking the advice of his brother Carl, however, W. M. moved to Florida during the Land Boom of the Twenties. He purchased a Miami store, the Rockmoor Grocery, and his family changed its name to “Table Supply” in 1927. It began to branch northward to Tampa and the central part of the state."

"THE W/D NAME — A red letter date came in 1952, when Winn & Lovett was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. It proved the first Florida industrial corporation to do so. Three years later, the name “Winn-Dixie” was adopted after the purchase of 117 Dixie Home supermarkets in the Carolinas. The Dixie Home leaders requested that “Dixie” be kept as part of the title. Can you picture the checkmark in the Winn-Dixie logo? It comes from the logo of another grocery chain, Kwik Chek, which had joined the Winn & Lovett company sometime in the early 1950s. The name Kwik Chek first appeared in a 1953 Winn & Lovett annual report but there were no newspaper notices of an acquisition or merger."
