Sealane Marketing believes that understanding the roots of the industry that we serve has been and continues to be critical to our success. So every Thursday, we plan on sharing what we call an "Industry Throwback" in which we give a glimpse of our industry's history.

On Sept. 6, 1930, George Jenkins (pictured above) opened his first store, called Publix Food Store, in Winter Haven (pictured above). In 1935, he opened a second location across town. He closed these first two stores to open his dream store, the first Publix Super Market, on Nov. 8, 1940. A "food palace" of marble, glass and stucco, this store included innovations such as air conditioning, fluorescent lighting, electric eye doors and terrazzo floors. In 1945, he acquired a warehouse and 19 All American stores from the Lakeland Grocery Company. He began replacing these small stores with larger supermarkets. He continued his never-ending expansion, bringing the Publix standard of clean stores, friendly service and quality merchandise to customers throughout Florida.

Sealane Marketing believes that understanding the roots of the industry that we serve has been and continues to be critical to our success. So every Thursday, we plan on sharing what we call an "Industry Throwback" in which we give a glimpse of our industry's history.

"Robert Bell tells his story of being a lifeguard in Miami Beach in his early to mid teens. While working as a pool boy at hotels such as the Fountainbleu, he was exposed to the number of suncare/tanning products available. This knowledge and firsthand experience would become the basis for his passion and thoroughness in creating the best suncare products on the market all the while building an ever evolving and growing business model.
In 1981, armed with a recent bachelor's degree from Florida International University, 21-year-old Bell took on the reigns of building the Banana Boat brand from its very beginnings. A foundational lesson from a FIU marketing course was a concept known as the “4 Ps”: Product, Price, Place and Promotion.
Over the coming years, Bell discovered a 5th P — that being People — as he surrounded himself with a quality team of business players to help develop the Banana Boat brand of suncare products.
With innovative products including the introduction of SPF 23 when the industry standard was 15, about the time back in 1987 when then President Ronald Reagan was diagnosed with skin cancer on his nose, the brand was No. 3 in the USA by the end of the 1980s. A sixth P being Promotions also played a significant role in Banana Boat's growth with product endorsees Christy Fichtner, Miss USA 1986, and Olympic Gold Medal Diver, Greg Louganis also in '87"

"In 1930, Emanuel Stolaroff established a small company in Los Angeles specializing in cosmetic products and personal hygiene products, by the name of Natone.
In 1954, when he was travelling to Europe on business, he heard about an amazing soap: soft, transparent amber, quick and easy to rinse out, without leaving any residue. In a word, it is the ideal soap because it does not irritate the skin. It was then given the name of NEUTROGENA®, due to its neutral pH, almost identical to that of water.
Convinced that there was a market for soap of such quality, Emanuel Stolaroff established an innovative commercial strategy for his time. Deciding to differentiate from his competitors, he focused on the transparent amber soap and extended its area of distribution to large stores and pharmacies. It was a success. The soap sold so well that in 1962, NEUTROGENA® became the group brand."
