On Sept. 6, 1930, George Jenkins (pictured above) opened his first store, called Publix Food Store, in Winter Haven (pictured above). In 1935, he opened a second location across town. He closed these first two stores to open his dream store, the first Publix Super Market, on Nov. 8, 1940. A "food palace" of marble, glass and stucco, this store included innovations such as air conditioning, fluorescent lighting, electric eye doors and terrazzo floors. In 1945, he acquired a warehouse and 19 All-American stores from the Lakeland Grocery Company. He began replacing these small stores with larger supermarkets. He continued his never-ending expansion, bringing the Publix standard of clean stores, friendly service and quality merchandise to customers throughout Florida.
Flash forward to 2009, Publix Supermarkets opened its 1,000th store on Feb. 5 in St. Augustine and gave grants of $1,000 each to eight area schools as part of the celebration.
Today, Publix Supermarkets has 1 store open in Kentucky with 3 more planned to be built, successfully transitioning Publix into operating in 8 states. These 8 states consist of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and now, Kentucky! As of January 2023, there are a total of 1,324 store locations open. 855 are in Florida, 207 are in Georgia, 87 in Alabama, 69 in South Carolina, 57 in Tennessee, 54 in North Carolina, 19 in Virginia, and 1 in Kentucky.
